Annual General Meeting - Thursday 1st October - Ty Mawr Function Room
Chairman’s Report – AGM 2009
The past year has seen our football club continue to grow and develop. Our mini section is now amongst the strongest in the district and our juniors are beginning to come through and perform to a higher level than previously. In particular I’d like to praise the U12’s who won the 2nd division, the U14’s who narrowly missed out on the division 1 title on the last day of the season and the U15’s who won promotion to division 1. This season we have teams in division 1 in four of the five age groups which is the strongest position we have been in. In addition our senior team, run by Steve Ward, won promotion to the Cardiff Combination Premier Division and have made a positive start to the season. Last season the U14 girls won the league, the cup and the Tesco Cup South Wales area and only went out in the Welsh finals after being beaten by the eventual winners. They were without doubt our most successful team.
The aperitif to the mini season is our very own Thornhill Festival which again this year was run to a very high standard. The organisation and atmosphere at the festival was first class and was a credit to all those involved. Financially it was also very successfully generating a profit of over £2000.00 thanks to all of the hard work of the organisers in not only arranging for everything to go so smoothly, but arranging for stands, sponsors and a raffle. Congratulations to all involved.
At last year’s AGM we agreed to increase our fees, mainly to pay for the additional costs of the Powerleague pitches, and secondly to help raise money to enable the Club to look at the longer term and begin some development of the pitch at Thornhill Park. Currently we are developing strong junior teams who will not have a pitch and facilities available to them when they reach the standard of the South Wales Youth League. They will either be restricted in the football they can play or be forced to play for another club. The senior team face similar issues.
In order for the seniors to take the next step, i.e. either the South Wales Senior League or the South Wales Amateur League, they need to have a barrier surrounding the pitch. It would also be useful to be able to remove and store the goalposts in order to aid the pitch.
We have started the process of raising funds to improve some of the facilities, but we really need to improve the standard of the pitch itself in conjunction with the barrier and the goals. To facilitate further progress with regards the pitch we have started consulting with the Football Development Officer and some other contacts in order to start the process of seeking grant money to do the job.
Almost all of our teams are crying out for a decent home pitch, and while we have a great venue at Thornhill field we are let down by the pitches (mini and full-size). Last year we had the best U14 girls side in South Wales and they had to make do with unacceptable pitches at
With regards how our teams and players fit in with our plan I would envisage the U15’s developing into a very strong Welsh Youth League team with the U13’s following in their path. We’d also like to take the U12, U14 and U16 girls up to the highest levels we can and provide a clear path for girls and boys all the way from minis to juniors, youth and senior football.
With the Seniors continuing to progress we should be able to offer the opportunity of youth or senior football to all players when they finish at U16 level. The more young footballers we can retain in the Club the more they can help coach and the stronger the Club will become.
On the administrative side we are still desperately short of support. The burden falls heavily on Julian, in particular, and Mark. To progress we need help. This help may take many forms so if you think you can give something more to the Club, or if you think you know someone who may be able to, then let us know please. We are particularly keen to recruit someone to support Julian in the Secretarial role and someone to co-ordinate and develop our fund-raising and sponsorship activities.
We should now be in the position where all teams are playing football, have their kit and know where they are training this winter. Any queries from this point therefore can be emailed to Julian, Mark and myself and one of us will reply as soon as we can.
Well done all on another highly successful year and good luck for this season.
Rob

Thornhill Football Festival: A massive thank you to everyone who helped to make the festival such a massive success. Last year's festival was always going to take some beating, but this year's organisers certainly match the previous one in every way.
